There are a couple of things you could ask yourself about this picture, for one why is it in English? (Well, it is listed as one of the official languages.) Why does it say “Let’s talk about AIDS” ? This is a mural at a deaf school right? But most important, why is this the way the Peace Corps goes about dealing with the AIDS crisis in Africa ?
Throughout today I’ve seen pictures of well meaning, goofy looking, white people showing how well they’ve gotten people in Africa to start talking about AIDS. Thing is, if you were living in place where 7 out of 100 people had HIV/AIDS wouldn’t you talk about it. People already talk about sex a good bit, imagine if life and death was thrown in there. The gossip mill that is naturally chugging along would get cranked to 11 if there was the chance of a killer disease lurking behind every flirtatious smile.
Can’t claim that this was an original thought. Check out the Gossip episode of TAL
